This is a popular French restaurant in the lively northern town of Ormskirk, near Liverpool. This is my second visit here with friends, having been this time last year under the same circumstances natively known as "The Grand National".

Last year we managed to crash the joint as we hadn’t booked, but our dickie-bo’s seemed to confer some extra attention and we got a table after a 5 minute wait. This year we booked, and I’d recommend you do too if it’s a Friday or Saturday evening.

There were six of us there on this occasion; GG, Joe, Cler, Tina, Huzz, and myself, and with weary legs and slightly over budget (no big winners this year) wallets, we began with a couple of bottles of wine. One white, one rose. Four of us had starters, garlic bread, Thai fish cakes x 2, and soup of the day (minestrone I think). All were agreeable, no complaints were forthcoming. Mains varied from stuffed chicken breast, to swordfish to steak. Only one comment was uttered along the lines of the swordfish being slightly over-cooked and mushy. I had the halibut, with crab risotto, which was perfect IMHO. The steak lovers enthused the fact their steak was cooked correctly (one well-done and one medium-rare). Miscellanous veg was also consumed, again no complaints.

Struggling after the 3rd or 4th bottle of wine, the die-hards ordered dessert – vanilla and raspberry cheesecake. Both ladies, noted for their cheesecake experience, were delighted with their puddings, although my little sampler I found to be rather soggy…I much prefer the dense affairs that are NY cheesecakes.

Nice, attentive waiters/waitresses, happy to ensure we had everything we needed, and up for a joke with us high-spirited foreigners. Mutli-levels with smokers on the top-deck. The bill including the wine was a shade higher than £20 a head. Not bad at all.

I’d recommend this one if you like this kind of food and you’re in the area. This may end up being our regular for the Grand National now.!

Photo’s coming soon!
