Although I have left the TCS Monkey Troup now, it's still an honour to share the delights of a fine curry establishment, and this evening brought just such an occasion. So myself, the Silverback, Monkey, MickeyD and Mark (eats every scrap) set out.

The Troup had already found this place not far from their current hotel in the wilds of Leicestershire, and it's a good-un. I've been there once before.

Here, from Monday to Thursday, from 6pm to 11pm, they do five "courses" for £8.50 per head. Sounds good eh?…well if your are suspicous, don't be, 'cause it's still a good deal.

Course 1 – popadums and pickles
Course 2 – choose a starter from the list
Course 3 – choose a rice or bread from the list
Course 4 – choose a main meal
Course 5 – ice cream or coffee

It's all good squishy too, though to be fair, a hearty appetite may dictate the purchase of additional side dishes as it's rice *or* bread, not both.

The pickles included a red spicy sauce, and I was warned it was on the hot side. Myself, I didn't find it particular hot, but others might.

I had Chicken Chat for starters, no problems here – standard fare, tandoori roti, garlic chilli chicken balti and a sag aloo. Everything was bob-on. The chilli chicken was not too spicy, I'd put it top-end dupiaza, low-end madras, and was lovely. The sag aloo really nice too. [pic to follow].

No complaints from the rest of the Troupe until the bill came, and we'd gone over budget. This was because of the beer and the extra side dishes. A mexican stand-off began, bill scrutiny and ended when an Egg card appeared – yay!

A fine, budget choice.

UPDATE

Went again last night, with various TCS/A&L cohorts, and once again nothing was disappointing.

This time I plumped for a Chicken Tikka Puri starter (really tasty), Chicken Madras (nice, not too spicey), garlic fried rice (be careful here, burnt garlic tastes bitter and this rice is loaded with garlic) and a keema nan (this one was thin and crispy).

Again, a great deal, and no complaints from any of the other 7 techies who attended.

RECOMMENDED.
