"tip" is a solaris tool for creating a serial connection between devices. This can be used to connect a Solaris server to another Solaris server, or in my case, from a Solaris server to a 3320 disk array. This latter connection is used to access the array's firmware in order to configure devices that the Solaris server can see on the SCSI connections.
